Berry Bright in Winter's Blue

Date

November 2025

Project type

Colored Pencil

As I moved through my daily routines, I found myself constantly searching for nature’s next invitation — something that might spark a new challenge or offer a fresh problem to solve. Every project brings its own joys and puzzles, especially when trying to translate a three‑dimensional subject into the illusion of depth on a flat sheet of paper. One afternoon, on the edge of a parking lot, I noticed a juniper branch dotted with cream and periwinkle berries. The colors were striking, the textures intricate, and the complexity… intimidating. I almost walked past it.
But something in me paused. I took a photograph — a small act of courage, a promise to myself that I might try. And eventually, I did.
A juniper branch rests quietly against cool blue tonal paper, its clustered berries and crisp needles rendered with attentive, realistic detail. Soft forms and sharp lines play gently against one another, evoking the stillness and clarity of winter air. The blue paper deepens the sense of frost and serenity, while subtle shadows anchor the branch in space, inviting viewers to pause and feel its presence.
More than a botanical study, this drawing becomes a meditation on endurance, light, and the quiet brightness winter carries.
Spend a moment with this piece to experience the understated beauty found in nature’s winter offerings.
