Cedar's Hidden Offering
After completing my first juniper study, my art teacher challenged me to return to the tree and focus more deeply on the berries — to create a larger, more detailed drawing. The “berries,” as it turns out, aren’t berries at all but tiny pinecones. Who would have guessed? I went back to the same tree on the edge of the parking lot, and yes… I may have stuck my head into the branches, hopefully without an audience. Looking deeper, I took new reference photos, studying the tiny cones, the textured bark, and the needles with their almost mathematical geometry. Sometimes the artist and the subject end up far closer than either expected.
A close‑up study of juniper pine branches reveals their intricate geometry, weaving a protective lattice around clusters of soft blue and purple cones. Each one carries its own subtle variations, a natural veil that softens their presence against the complex backdrop. The interplay of textures — green needles, luminous cones, and earthy tones — creates a quiet tension between sharpness and gentleness. Beyond its visual detail, the piece honors the juniper’s long‑held role as a spiritual and medicinal guardian, offering its subtle gifts of protection and healing.
Explore the piece to experience the quiet strength and delicate beauty held within these hidden offerings.
