The Sycamore's Winter Patchwork
Oh dear — what was I thinking? This very large drawing was created in honor of the American Sycamore, a subject so complex it should have scared me away. But the colors pulled me in. I found the tree on a morning walk, its bark shedding in winter’s chilled light, and it was both marvelous and daunting. With my new Derwent Nature pencils in hand, I tried to capture the shifting shadows, the layered textures, and the way every section of bark carried its own unique signature. It was a challenge that stretched me, but one I’m grateful I didn’t walk away from.
A moment of transformation captured in colored pencil. In December, the American Sycamore sheds its patchwork bark, revealing a shifting mosaic of orange, sage, soft greens, greys, and charcoal tones. This drawing lingers on that gentle unraveling — the way the tree lets go of one season while quietly preparing for the next. Each fragment of color becomes a small story of change, resilience, and the beauty found in transition.
