Interplay in the Quiet Dark
I bought a small collection of vintage marbles for this project — a task that turned out to be far more difficult than I expected. Finding the kind of marbles that I remembered from childhood took patience and persistence. Once I finally had them, I set them in the light and began studying the glass swirls inside, the tiny imperfections, the colors spilling across the surface, and the way they interacted with one another. This piece became a challenge that stretched me in every direction… and made me feel just a little vintage myself.
Rendered in colored pencil, this study of three vintage marbles explores how color and shadow speak to one another in unexpected ways. Each marble carries its own soft glow, their hues reflecting and mingling across the glass to create tiny exchanges of light that feel almost alive. Behind them, the shadows fall darker than anticipated — not airy or translucent, but rich and grounding, revealing the weight and presence of these small, timeworn spheres. Born from experimentation, the surprises of the process became part of the story.
Explore the piece to experience a quiet meditation on depth, reflection, and the subtle lessons found in observing simple objects with patience.
